Dragon Boat History
Dragon boat racing is the World's fastest growing paddle sport. It originated over 2000 years ago in ancient China as a "rain ceremony" to ensure plentiful crops. The dragon, a traditional symbol of water, is said to rule the rivers and seas and dominate the clouds and rains. The first races were mock battles staged to waken the dragons from hibernation. Today, dragon boat racing is a recreational and competitive sport enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. It combines tradition with modern day teamwork, enthusiasm, and strategy. Festivals are held throughout the spring and summer months. People attend not only for the races - many fun activities are enjoyed by all.
